About Mahi-Mahi
Party boats target mahi by running offshore to weed lines, floating debris, current edges, and temperature breaks where these fish congregate. Mahi travel in schools, so when one is hooked, the captain will often keep the boat near the school to hook multiple fish. Trolling with ballyhoo, skirted lures, or feathers is the primary technique, though casting live bait or chunks to a feeding school is equally productive.
The fight is pure adrenaline. Mahi are one of the most acrobatic fish in the ocean, launching themselves out of the water repeatedly while running at speed. On light to medium tackle, a big bull dolphin over 30 pounds will test your skills and your drag. Even "schoolie" mahi in the 5 to 15 pound range put on an unforgettable show.
