Mangrove Snapper, also called gray snapper, is one of the smartest and most challenging fish caught on party boats in Florida and the Gulf of America. These wary feeders are famous for stealing bait without getting hooked, making them a true test of skill.

Party boats find Mangrove Snapper around reefs, wrecks, bridges, and rock piles in depths of 20 to 120 feet. Light tackle, small hooks, and live shrimp, pilchards, or small pinfish produce the best results. Mangrove Snapper are line-shy and picky, so using lighter fluorocarbon leader and presenting baits naturally is key to success.

Once hooked, Mangrove Snapper put up a respectable fight, diving hard for structure and making quick runs. They are not the biggest fish on the reef, with most running 1 to 4 pounds, but fish exceeding 8 pounds are caught regularly on deeper offshore structure.

The eating quality is superb. Mangrove Snapper has firm, white flesh with a clean, sweet flavor that rivals Red Snapper. The fillets are perfect for grilling, blackening, or cooking whole. Many seasoned Florida anglers will tell you Mangrove Snapper is their favorite fish to eat.
