Party boats target Mutton Snapper over patch reefs, channel edges, and wrecks in depths of 30 to 120 feet. Live pilchards, pinfish, and ballyhoo drifted in the current or fished near the bottom are most effective. Mutton Snapper are wary feeders that require good presentation and light leaders.
The fight is excellent for a snapper. Mutton Snapper are among the strongest of the snapper family, making powerful runs toward structure and pulling hard throughout the fight. Fish commonly run 5 to 15 pounds, with trophy fish exceeding 20 pounds.
