Gray Triggerfish are one of the most underrated catches on party boat trips along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. These tough, leather-skinned fish are incredibly aggressive feeders and put up a stubborn fight on light tackle that surprises many first-time anglers.

Party boats encounter Gray Triggerfish over reefs, wrecks, and hard bottom structures in depths of 40 to 150 feet. Small pieces of squid, shrimp, or cut bait on small, sharp hooks work best because triggerfish have tiny mouths relative to their body size. They are notorious bait stealers, so quick reflexes and patience are essential.

Despite their compact size, Gray Triggerfish fight like fish twice their weight. They use their flat, disc-shaped body to create drag and will pull hard toward structure. Most fish run 2 to 5 pounds, which is plenty of fight on a party boat rod.

The real surprise is the eating quality. Triggerfish has firm, white meat with a sweet, almost crab-like flavor that many anglers consider the best-tasting fish in the ocean. The skin is tough and must be removed before cooking, but the effort is absolutely worth it. Once you taste triggerfish, you will start targeting them on purpose.
