Wahoo is the speed demon of the ocean and one of the most thrilling catches on party boat trips in southern waters. These torpedo-shaped predators are among the fastest fish in the sea, capable of bursting past 60 mph.
Party boats encounter Wahoo while trolling at higher speeds along current edges, temperature breaks, and near floating debris and weed lines. High-speed lures, skirted ballyhoo, and diving plugs pulled at 8 to 15 knots trigger their predatory instinct. The strike is explosive, often snapping the line from the outrigger clip with a crack.
The fight starts with an absolutely blistering run that strips line at an alarming rate. Wahoo run fast, straight, and hard, and their razor-sharp teeth demand wire leader. Fish commonly run 20 to 50 pounds, with trophy fish exceeding 80 pounds. The speed of the initial run is unlike anything else in the ocean.
Wahoo is one of the finest eating fish in the sea. The white, firm, flaky flesh has a mild, delicate flavor that is perfect seared rare, grilled, or made into ceviche. Many serious anglers rank Wahoo as their top fish to eat, and for good reason.
