Spanish Mackerel is a fast-moving, hard-hitting gamefish that brings excitement to party boat trips along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. These sleek, spotted predators travel in large schools and provide nonstop action when they are around.
Party boats target Spanish Mackerel by trolling small spoons, jigs, and Clark spoons behind planers, or by drifting and casting to visible schools. They feed aggressively on small baitfish near the surface, so light tackle and fast-moving lures are most effective.
The fight is fast and furious. Spanish Mackerel make screaming runs and razor-sharp turns, bending rods and testing drags. They are one of the fastest nearshore fish, and their acrobatics keep the action exciting. Most fish run 2 to 5 pounds, with larger fish reaching 8 to 10 pounds.
Spanish Mackerel is good eating when kept cold and prepared fresh. The flesh is oilier than white fish but has a rich, pleasant flavor that is excellent grilled, blackened, or smoked.
