Atlantic Bonito is a fast-moving pelagic fish that shows up on party boats along the entire Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to Florida. These aggressive predators travel in schools and provide lightning-fast action that keeps the deck buzzing.

Party boats encounter bonito while trolling, jigging, or chunking over open water and near structure. Small metal jigs, diamond jigs, and live bait work well. Bonito feed aggressively and compete with each other for food, so when you find a school, multiple hookups happen simultaneously.

The fight is all about speed. Bonito make blazing runs that will test your drag and line capacity. For their size, they are one of the strongest fish in the ocean, pulling relentlessly and making multiple runs. Most fish run 3 to 8 pounds, with some reaching 12 pounds.

Bonito has dark, rich flesh that divides opinion at the table. When bled immediately and kept cold, the meat can be excellent seared rare, used in poke bowls, or smoked. It is also one of the best fish for strip baits when targeting larger gamefish. Fresh bonito prepared as sashimi can surprise people who dismiss it.
