Kelp Bass, also called calico bass, is one of the most popular gamefish on Southern California party boats. These aggressive, structure-oriented fish are reliable biters that provide great sport on light tackle around kelp beds and rocky reefs.

Party boats target Kelp Bass over rocky reefs, kelp forests, and structure in depths of 10 to 100 feet. Live anchovies and sardines are the go-to baits, though soft plastics, swimbaits, and iron jigs also work well. Kelp Bass are territorial and competitive, often racing each other to the bait.

The fight is exciting for their size. Kelp Bass are strong, scrappy fighters that dive for the kelp canopy and rocky structure. Getting them out of the kelp before they tangle your line is the main challenge. Most fish run 1 to 4 pounds, with trophy fish reaching 8 to 10 pounds.

Kelp Bass is good eating with white, mild flesh. However, regulations in California emphasize conservation with strict size and bag limits, as Kelp Bass are slow-growing. Many anglers practice catch and release, enjoying the sport and returning these beautiful fish to the kelp beds.
