Golden Tilefish is a colorful deep-water prize caught on specialized party boat trips along the Atlantic coast. These brilliantly colored fish, with their blue, gold, and yellow markings, live in deep mud-bottom habitats and are one of the best-eating fish in the ocean.

Party boats target Golden Tilefish by deep-dropping in depths of 400 to 1,000 feet over mud and clay bottoms where tilefish build their burrows. Heavy tackle with electric reels is often necessary to reach and retrieve fish from these extreme depths. Cut squid and clam are standard baits.

The fight is a long-distance battle. While tilefish are not the most powerful fighters, the sheer depth creates a significant physical challenge. Cranking a fish up from 600 feet of water takes time and stamina. Fish commonly run 5 to 15 pounds, with larger fish exceeding 30 pounds.

Golden Tilefish is one of the most prized eating fish in the Atlantic. The white, firm flesh has a sweet, almost lobster-like flavor and buttery texture that is absolutely exceptional. Tilefish is a fixture at high-end seafood restaurants and commands premium prices for good reason.
