Blackfin Tuna is the most common tuna species caught on party boats in the South Atlantic and Gulf of America. These hard-fighting, beautiful fish are smaller than their Yellowfin and Bluefin cousins but deliver impressive fights and great eating.
Party boats target Blackfin Tuna by chunking, live baiting, and trolling near reef edges, current rips, and offshore structure. Flat-line trolling with small feathers, cedar plugs, and rigged ballyhoo is effective, as is drifting live pilchards and sardines. Blackfin are often found mixed with other pelagic species.
The fight is disproportionate to their size. Blackfin Tuna pull incredibly hard, making sustained runs and using their rigid body to create maximum drag. Their stamina is remarkable, and they rarely give up easily. Fish commonly run 10 to 25 pounds, with larger fish reaching 35 pounds.
Blackfin Tuna is outstanding at the table. The dark red flesh is rich, clean, and excellent as sashimi, seared rare, or grilled. Many anglers consider fresh Blackfin Tuna sashimi on the boat ride home to be one of fishing's greatest pleasures.
