White Grunt Fishing Charters

White Grunt is a common reef fish found on party boat trips throughout Florida and the South Atlantic. While not a glamour species, these plentiful fish provide steady action and surprisingly good eating for anglers looking to fill the cooler.

Party boats encounter White Grunt over coral reefs, hard bottom, and wrecks in depths of 30 to 100 feet. Small pieces of squid, shrimp, or cut bait fished near the bottom produce consistent bites. Grunts get their name from the distinctive grunting sound they make by grinding their teeth.

White Grunt are cooperative biters that fight with short, spirited runs. Most fish run 0.5 to 2 pounds, with larger fish reaching 3 pounds. They often school up around structure, so when you catch one, more are likely on the way.

At the table, White Grunt is better than most people expect. The white, mild flesh has a sweet flavor and flaky texture that is excellent fried whole or filleted. In South Florida and the Keys, fried grunt is a traditional meal that locals have enjoyed for generations.
