California Halibut is a prized flatfish caught on party boats along the California coast. These ambush predators lie camouflaged on sandy bottoms near structure and provide a unique fishing experience with excellent rewards at the table.

Party boats target California Halibut by drifting or slow-trolling over sandy areas adjacent to reefs, kelp beds, and structure in depths of 10 to 100 feet. Live anchovies, sardines, and squid drifted near the bottom are the most effective baits. The bite is often subtle, requiring patience before setting the hook.

California Halibut fight with strong runs and use their broad, flat body to create resistance. They are not the most acrobatic fighters, but their weight and determination make them a satisfying catch. Fish commonly run 4 to 15 pounds, with barn-door halibut exceeding 30 pounds.
