Blackfin Snapper is a deep-water species found on party boat trips in the Caribbean-influenced waters of South Florida and the Keys. While less common than Red or Vermilion Snapper, these striking fish with their dark-edged fins are a welcome addition to any catch.

Party boats encounter Blackfin Snapper over deep reefs and ledges in depths of 200 to 600 feet. Cut squid, fish, and heavy rigs are needed to reach the depths where Blackfins live. They often share habitat with other deep-water snappers like Queen and Silk Snapper.

The fight is enhanced by the extreme depth. Pulling any fish up from several hundred feet of water is a workout, and Blackfin Snapper add their own resistance with steady pulling power. Fish typically run 2 to 6 pounds, with larger specimens reaching 10 pounds.

Blackfin Snapper is very good to eat, with firm, white flesh similar in quality to other snappers. The mild, sweet meat is excellent prepared any way you like it. Deep-dropping trips that produce Blackfin Snapper often yield a variety of deep-water species, making for an impressive and diverse cooler.
