About Scamp Grouper
Party boats find Scamp over deep ledges, rock piles, and wrecks in depths of 120 to 400 feet. Live bait and squid dropped to the bottom near structure are the standard approach. Scamp tend to hold in deeper water than other grouper species, so trips targeting them run farther offshore.
Like all grouper, Scamp fight by diving hard for structure. The battle from deep water adds an extra dimension, as you need to work the fish up through the entire water column. Fish commonly run 3 to 10 pounds, with larger specimens exceeding 15 pounds.
