Red Porgy is a handsome pink-hued fish caught on party boats along the South Atlantic coast, particularly off the Carolinas and Georgia. These reef-associated fish are a favorite among anglers who appreciate their cooperative nature and fine eating quality.

Party boats find Red Porgy over hard bottom, rocky outcroppings, and ledges in depths of 80 to 250 feet. Small pieces of squid, shrimp, and cut bait fished on double-hook rigs near the bottom are the most effective approach. Red Porgy often school together, providing multi-fish hookups.

Red Porgy are steady fighters that pull hard against the line, especially from deep water. Most fish run 1 to 4 pounds, with larger specimens reaching 6 pounds. They are often caught alongside other reef species like Vermilion Snapper and Grunts as part of a mixed bag.

The eating quality is excellent. Red Porgy has white, delicate flesh with a mild, sweet flavor. Pan-fried or baked whole, Red Porgy is a treat. It is a popular fish in Mediterranean cuisine, where it is known by the name "tai" and highly valued.
