Sheepshead is a distinctive fish with bold black-and-white vertical stripes and a set of human-like teeth that it uses to crush shellfish. Party boats targeting nearshore structure encounter these clever fish, which provide a real challenge to hook.

Party boats find Sheepshead around pilings, bridges, jetties, and rocky structure in depths of 5 to 40 feet. Fiddler crabs, sand fleas, shrimp, and barnacle clusters are the preferred baits. Sheepshead are infamous bait stealers, nibbling baits clean with surgical precision. A sensitive rod tip and quick hook set are essential.

The fight is surprisingly strong for a fish of their size. Sheepshead dive hard for structure and use their flat body to resist being pulled up. Most fish run 2 to 5 pounds, with large fish reaching 8 to 10 pounds. Getting one away from the pilings before it wraps your line takes skill.

Sheepshead is one of the most underrated eating fish in the South. The white, firm flesh has a sweet, shellfish-like flavor from their crustacean diet. Pan-fried or baked, Sheepshead is absolutely delicious. The difficult cleaning process is well worth the effort.
