Blue Rockfish Fishing Charters

Blue Rockfish is one of the most commonly caught species on party boats along the Pacific Coast from Central California to Oregon. These colorful reef dwellers school over rocky structure and provide steady action on half-day and full-day trips.

Party boats target Blue Rockfish over rocky reefs, pinnacles, and kelp beds in depths of 40 to 200 feet. Shrimp flies, squid strips, and small jigs fished near the bottom or in the water column work well. Blue Rockfish often feed in midwater above the reef, so varying your depth can produce more bites.

Blue Rockfish fight reasonably well, especially when caught from deep water where the pressure change adds to the challenge. Most fish run 1 to 3 pounds, with occasional fish reaching 4 pounds. They are usually part of a mixed bag that can include other rockfish species, lingcod, and cabezon.

The eating quality is good, with mild, white flesh that works well fried, baked, or in fish tacos. Rockfish in general are reliable table fare. Bag limits and depth restrictions help protect the population, as rockfish are slow-growing and long-lived.
